Redhawks Outlast Austin Peay in Overtime, 73-68, Saturday

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Taelour Pruitt registered a personal-high 25 points and combined with Tesia Thompson (20) and LaTrese Saine (15) for 60 points as Southeast Missouri women's basketball (13-8, 11-5 OVC) outlasted Austin Peay (10-7, 8-5 OVC), 73-68, in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Winfield Dunn Center.
 
Pruitt shot 6-for-8 from the field in her fourth game back from injury. The junior from Arlington, Texas, finished 4-for-6 on treys and 9-for-10 at the charity stripe. She also dished out four assists and tallied four steals in the victory.
 
Saine compiled her eighth double-double of the campaign with 15 points and 14 rebounds to complement four blocks.
 
Thompson was 9-for-17 on field goals with eight boards and three steals.
 
With SEMO trailing a point, 62-61, Thompson drew a foul with five seconds left in the fourth to head to the charity stripe where she knotted the contest at 62-62 to send the game to overtime. 
 
In the overtime period, the Redhawks outscored Austin Peay, 11-6. The Redhawks shot 60 percent from the field (3-for-5) and 83 percent at the free throw line. The Governors struggled in the extra five minutes with a 20 percent rate from the field.
 
SEMO opened the frame with a lay-up by Thompson to pull ahead 64-62 at the 4:50 mark.
 
Thompson would then swish a jumper to extend the Redhawks lead to 66-63 after a free throw from Ella Sawyer.
 
Shay-Lee Kirby hit a 3-pointer with 3:49 left in the extra quarter to knot the game at 66-66.
 
Pruitt then converted her pair of free throws before sinking a turnaround jumper to grow the Redhawks advantage to 70-66 with 2:36 left in the period.
 
She finished the overtime period with six points, including a perfect 4-for-4 mark at the charity stripe.
 
Saine added a free throw to push the margin to 71-66. Brianah Ferby then made both her free throws to cut into the SEMO edge, 71-68.
 
Down the stretch, Pruitt connected on two more free throws after a steal to seal the overtime victory.
 
SEMO took an early 15-11 lead after the opening quarter before the Governors knotted the game at 32-32 heading to the break after a 21-17 second frame.
 
Saturday's game featured 12 ties and 18 lead changes.
 
Austin Peay outscored the Redhawks 51-47 in the final three quarters.
 
SEMO shot 48 percent from the field in the game with a 78 percent third quarter. The Govs were 39 percent on the day including a 50 percent third frame.
 
The Redhawks finished with a season-best 55.6 percent from behind the arc while APSU converted on 32 percent of their trey attempts.
 
At the charity stripe, SEMO finished with a rate of 75 percent. Austin Peay finished 74 percent on free throws.
 
APSU outrebounded the Redhawks, 36-33.
 
The Governors had four players in double-figures scoring with Ferby leading the way with 21. D'Shara Booker added 15, Kirby poured in 14 and Maggie Knowles had 11.
 
The Redhawks next return home to Cape Girardeau for their final regular-season home games. SEMO takes on Eastern Kentucky Thursday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m., CT at the Show Me Center. The Redhawks then host Morehead State on Saturday, Feb. 20 on Senior Day. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
