Redhawks Sweep Murray State to Improve to 3-1 in the OVC

MURRAY, Ky. – Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (11-7, 3-1) swept Murray State (9-7, 3-1), 25-23, 25-20, 25-18, Saturday evening at Racer Arena to improve to 3-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference play.
The win was the first for the Redhawks over Murray State in Murray, Kentucky, since Oct. 12, 2013 and capped a 2-0 weekend for Southeast.
"It was another great team effort tonight in order to earn a huge road victory," head coach Julie Yankus said. "Our pin hitters did a great job terminating efficiently, our middles did a great job blocking, and our defenders did a great job executing the first contact. I believe this weekend will be a huge confidence boost for the entire team and proof that their hard work is paying off.
Laney Malloy led the Redhawks offense with 12 kills. Mikayla Kuhlmann added 11 and Annie Wehrheim chipped in nine.
Setter Claire Ochs dished out 30 assists and had a double-double with 10 digs.
Tara Beilsmith led the defense with 20 digs and Emily Boggetto had seven.
Southeast hit a match-high .500 in the second set and committed no errors during the middle frame. SEMO utilized a pair of 4-0 runs in their commanding second set to pull ahead 16-10 and then 20-16 down the stretch.
The Redhawks concluded the match with a .357 mark in the third set to finish with a .314 match clip.
Southeast out blocked the Racers 11-3. Maggie Adams tallied seven blocks while Ochs and Krista Berns each had four.
Berns now ranks fourth all-time in Southeast program history (25-point rally scoring era from 2008 to present) with 247 career block assists. She overtook Kelsey Keeve (245 block assists from 2011-14) for fourth on the list.
SEMO returns to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, for a four-match homestand at Houck Field House. The Redhawks host Eastern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. before facing SIUE Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m.
