NASHVILLE, Tenn. - No. 5 Southeast Missouri (8-7-3) scored a pair of goals just 1:33 apart en route to a 2-1 victory over No. 8 Austin Peay (9-6-3) Friday night in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament at E.S. Rose Park.
SEMO, which appeared in its 16th OVC Tournament this season, posted its first postseason win since 2015.
Both teams were scoreless until the 29th minute when Maddi Karstens scored off a deflection by APSU goalkeeper Mary Parker Powell. Karstens first goal of the season came at the 29:07 mark officially.
One minute and 33 seconds later, Jennifer Brien dribbled in and passed to Esmie Gonzales who sent her team-high eighth goal of the season into the left corner.
The Redhawks and Governors played an agreesive first half, which featured a combined 12 shots. Five of those were on goal for SEMO.
SEMO polished off its win with a strong defensive effort in the second stanza.
APSU, which outshot the Redhawks, 12-2, in the final 45 minutes, managed to get on the board at the 82nd minute. McKenzie Dixon scored on a penalty kick after she was taken down in the box. Her shot just cleared the outstretched arms of Redhawks goalie Kindra Lierz, narrowing SEMO's lead to 2-1.
The Redhawks then weathered APSU's attack in the closing minutes.
Lierz, who picked up her fifth win in goal this season, finished with six saves.
SEMO, which has won four in a row, advances to the quarterfinals to face No. 4 Belmont Sunday. Start time is 2 p.m., CT.
