Redhawks Defeated by Morehead State, 65-59

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (7-9, 0-3) was defeated 64-59 by Morehead State (6-9, 2-0) in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup Thursday at the Show Me Center.
Olivia Hackmann scored a game-high 18 points off the bench to lead Southeast while Connor King added a double-double with a season-best 12 points paired with 12 rebounds.
The Redhawks shot just 30.0% (21-for-70) from the floor while the Eagles made 38.9% (21-for-54) of their field goal attempts. Southeast drained five 3-pointers while Morehead went 0-for-13 from beyond the arc.
Morehead opened on an 8-2 run over the game's first four minutes. Southeast was unable to connect on its first eight field goal attempts before King and Brianna Mitchell scored on consecutive possessions.
Southeast went on a 7-2 run to pull within one on a layup by Hillary Lively to make the score 10-9. Hackmann drained two free throws to again cut the lead to one at 12-11 with 11:35 remaining in the first half. King followed suit to make it 14-13 with 9:34 on the clock.
Both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half. Alyssa Bradshaw gave Southeast its first lead of the game with her 146th career 3-pointer 50 seconds before halftime. Following an Eagles free throw, the teams headed to the locker room tied 26-26.
The Redhawks shot 31.0% (9-for-29) from the floor during the first 20 minutes while Morehead shot 29.2% (7-for-24). King led Southeast with six points in the first half. Shay Steele had eight first-half points for the Eagles.
Southeast opened the second half on a 5-0 run, capped by Bradshaw's second triple of the contest. She connected on another trey to increase the lead to 45-40 with 12:16 remaining.
The Eagles then drained their next five shots to go on a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead.
Hackmann cut the deficit to 52-49 with 6:58 left on a floater in the paint. That was as close as the Redhawks would come as Morehead State held on for the victory.
Almesha Jones paced the Eagles with 17 points and nine rebounds while Shay Steele recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.
Southeast continues the OVC homestand against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Tip-off is schedule for 3:30 p.m. at the Show Me Center as the first part of a doubleheader with the men's squads.
