CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri gymnastics team had a late change to its lineup but still put a strong showing in front of the seventh-largest crowd in Southeast gymnastics history, scoring a 193.625. Michigan State won the meet with a 194.900.
Senior Taryn Vanderpool landed awkwardly during warm-ups and did not compete for safety purposes.
"Overall, for the changes we had to make at the last minute, I am really pleased with the team stepping up and still putting up a really strong score despite not having Taryn as an all arounder," Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. "We did our job on three events. We still have some issues on the beam, but at the same time, our beam falls were not as bad as they have been as far as recovering and things like that."
The crowd of 703 saw the Redhawks begin the meet on the balance beam, scoring a 48.775, their second-highest total on the event this season. Megan Fosnow and Bailey Walker each scored a 9.800 for second-place honors. Walker's score tied a personal-best. Chelsi Hamilton tallied a 9.775 while Ashley Thomas had a 9.725.
"We played with the lineup on the vault today," Ewasko said. "I was really pleased with how it went. We had stronger vaults today than what we have been having and I think that shows in the scores."
Michigan State scored a 48.025 led by event champion Alina Cartwright with a 9.875.
The second rotation sent Southeast to the uneven bars, where it scored a 48.800. Fosnow tied for the event championship with a 9.825. Taylor Penzien and Lauren Israel each tied personal bests with a 9.775 while Alyssa Tucker scored a 9.750.
"The bars have been the consistent event for us," Ewasko said. "Knock on wood that it keeps going. We have a lot of freshmen in there and we are excited to continue to watch them grow."
The Spartans challenged with a 49.025 led by Dani Levy and Lisa Burt each with a 9.825.
Halfway through the meet, the Redhawks held a 97.575-97.050 advantage over the visiting Spartans.
The third rotation saw Southeast compete on the balance beam where they scored a 47.525. Taylor Penzien tied a career-best with a 9.775 and a second-place finish. Alyssa Tucker also fared well with a 9.750.
Michigan State countered with a 48.800 led by event champion Alina Cartwright with a 9.800.
The Redhawks finished the meet on the floor exercise with a 48.525. Ashley Thomas set a personal-best in a third-place finish and a score of 9.825. Chelsi Hamilton tied her season-best with a 9.800 while Bailey Walker scored a 9.700.
The Spartans tallied a 49.050 as Elena Lagoski scored a 9.900.
Alyssa Tucker was the only Redhawk to compete in the all-around, finishing with a 38.100.
Southeast celebrates its five seniors on Sunday, hosting Midwest Independent Conference foe Illinois State in the Show Me Center. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
"We are really looking for strong performances," Ewasko added. "You can expect all the seniors that are able to compete, to compete. We don't have Samantha Marrero competing but she is a really strong leader vocally.
"We expect to have Taryn back for some events, depending on how she feels. Erin Brady, Kimmie Pickerl and Megan Fosnow will all compete. It should be a really good farewell in the last home meet for them."
