MARTIN, Tenn. – Playing three-time defending Ohio Valley Conference Champion UT Martin, the Southeast Missouri women's basketball team fell 100-71 Monday evening in Martin, Tenn.
Â
The Redhawks did not have an answer for Jasmine Newsome and Heather Bulter, UT Martin's tandem that has each scored over 2,000 career points. Butler scored a game-high 23 points while Newsome dropped in 16.
Â
The Redhawks looked good early, grabbing the opening tip and scoring the first point of the game on a
Connor King free throw. After Ashia Jones answered with a jumper,
Jordan Hunter scored on a coast-to-coast layup.
Â
Heather Butler then hit a free throw of her own to knot the game up at three-all. That is when Newsome got cooking, knocking in three of her 16 first half points to give the Skyhawks a lead they would not relinquish.
Â
Southeast would keep it close until the midway point of the first half when a 13-0 UT Martin run inflated a 25-19 lead to a 40-19 advantage in just four minutes.
Â
Brianna Mitchell ended the run with a layup with 4:22 remaining in the first half as part of her career-high 20 points.
Â
Behind the lead, the Skyhawks kept cruising posting 50 second half points enroute to the 100-71 victory.
