CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri gymnastics team wraps up its home and home series against Illinois State on Sunday afternoon. A week ago, Southeast hosted ISU and dropped a 193.425-192.875 dual at Houck Field House. The meet begins at 2 p.m. and concludes Southeast's February competition schedule.

Last Week – Southeast posted season-high scores on bars and floor, but counted falls on vault and beam to drop its score to 192.875, its second highest total of the season. Taryn Vanderpool scored 9.725 or higher in three of her four events to post a career-best 39.025 in the all-around competition. Emma Garrett also won floor and finished second on vault to lead the Redhawks in those events.

About Illinois State – The Redbirds are the defending MIC Champions and scored 193.425 last week, their second-best total of the year, at Houck Field House. ISU has scored over 193 as a team in two of its last three meets. Sami King is the Redbirds' top all-around competitor and she boasts an RQS of 38.660.

First Touch

Where They Stand – The Redhawks have a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 192.305 after their Feb. 15 meet against Illinois State. Though the current NCAA rankings still arrange teams by season average, which puts Southeast 51st with a 192.538 average score. The top 36 teams in the final rankings clinch a team spot in the NCAA Regional Championships. Entering this week, Bridgeport sits 36th with a 194.118 average score.

Impact Freshman – While 11 of Southeast's 13 gymnasts were on the roster last year, the team is getting a lift from one of its freshmen already this season. Taylor Penzien cracked the lineup in at least two events for each of the first six meets. She has competed in three events or more five times, including the all-around twice. Penzien has tallied seven scores of 9.700 or higher this season, all of which have come in the last five meets.

Vanderpool's Big Start – Junior Taryn Vanderpool has emerged as a top gymnast for the Redhawks this season. After battling injuries for her first two campaigns, Vanderpool has stayed in the lineup to compete in the all-around in all six meets this year. She has either won the all-around or finished second in the competition in all six meets and leads the Redhawks with 15 scores of 9.700 or higher, something she did 13 total times in her first two seasons. Six of Vanderpool's scores this year have been 9.800 or higher and she has set career-highs on vault (9.775), beam (9.850) and all-around (39.025) this season.

Fosnow Shows Consistency – While Vanderpool has led the way in the early going, fellow junior Megan Fosnow is not far behind. Fosnow, who qualified for the NCAA regional championships as an individual in the all-around last year, has also competed in the all-around during all six meets. This year, she has scored 38.525 or higher in the all-around four times and boasts the team's highest score on vault (9.850) and floor (9.825). Fosnow's vault score ties Vanderpool's 9.850 beam and bars score for the highest mark of any Redhawk gymnast this season.
