Volleyball Set for Butler Invitational This Weekend

The Redhawks open up OVC play next weekend

The Redhawks will open up OVC play next Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Eastern Illinois.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. ­– The Southeast Missouri volleyball team head to Indianapolis, Ind. for the Butler Invitational at historic Hinkel Field House this weekend. This is Southeast's last tournament before they open up OVC play next weekend at SIUE and EIU. Southeast faces host Butler on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. They close out play on Saturday against Kent State (10:00 a.m.) and UC-Davis (1:00 p.m.).

News and Notes:

Road Warriors
Southeast opens up the season with 16 contests away from the friendly confines of Houck Field House. The Redhawks play 32-matches in all in 2012 with nine matches being played in the friendly confines of Houck Field House.

Dig This
Southeast leads the Ohio Valley Conference and ranks seventh in NCAA Division I in digs averaging 18.37 per set. Berkley Idel leads the Redhawks in digs at 4.71 per set, she also ranks 94th nationally. Colleen Yarber ranks second on the team in digs with 3.08 per set.

Forces In The Middle
Southeast recorded 14 blocks on Tuesday night against SIU, season-high for Southeast. The Redhawks have been impressive at the net in recent contest as they added 13 against SLU last Saturday.

Impressive Weekends
Southeast Missouri junior setter Julie Shives and Brittney Kalinoski were named to the All-Tournament team at SLU last weekend. Kalinoski led the Redhawks 41 kills on the weekend as she hit .260 and averaged 3.42 kills per set. She also added seven blocks and four service aces. Shives the reining OVC Setter of the Week was impressive with 111 assists as Southeast hit .234 as a team. She also added 15 kills and 38 digs averaging 3.17 per frame.

Moving Up the Charts
Junior setter Julie Shives ranks third all-time in assists at Southeast Missouri with 2,531. She recorded 942 assists in her first season and 1,180 in 2011.

Preseason Polls
The Southeast Missouri volleyball team was picked third in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll. The  Redhawks received 192 points and two first place votes in this season's poll. Morehead State the defending OVC Champions were picked to win the league with 242 points and 22 first place votes. Newcomer Belmont was picked second with 198 points after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2011.
