Quick Hits
About Jacksonville State – The Gamecocks have dropped eight-straight games and 17 of their last 18 contests, knocking them out of contention for a spot in next week's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. JSU is 10th in the 11-team OVC in both scoring offense (57.5 pointer/game) and scoring defense (73.7 points allowed/game). Jacksonville State is second in the league in rebounding margin (+2.0 per game) and is averaging 40.8 rebounds per contest. JSU commits a league-high 22.9 turnovers per game, nearly five more than the next worst team (Tennessee State). Individually, the Gamecocks have three players averaging 10 or more points per game. Briana Morrow tops all JSU players with 11.4 points per game, Danielle Vaughn is pouring in 10.8 points per game and Destiny Lane contributes 10.7 points per contest. Vaughn nearly averages double-digit rebounds as well, grabbing 9.4 boards per game (third most in the OVC).
Critical Stretch – Three-straight losses by Southeast have allowed Austin Peay to overtake the Redhawks in the race for the final spot in the OVC Tournament. Despite being a game back in the standings, Southeast controls its fate with two games left. If Southeast wins each of its last two games, which includes the regular season finale at Austin Peay on Feb. 25, the Redhawks will take the final seed in next week's tournament thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker (if the teams finish tied) or outright (if Austin Peay loses out and Southeast wins out).
Durable Beck – Senior
Bianca Beck has been a model of durability in her time at Southeast. The St. Louis, Mo., native has played in all of the Redhawks' games since arriving in 2008-09. Beck's 114 career games played is the third most by any Southeast player since the program went Division I prior to the 1991-92 season. Only
Rachel Blunt (123 games) and Tarina Nixon (120 games) have stepped on the floor in more games in the Redhawks' Division I era.
Harriel Heats Up – Junior forward
Brittany Harriel has been an offensive catalyst as of late. The Cincinnati, Ohio native has scored in double figures 11 times and recorded six double-doubles in her past 15 games. This coming after notching only two double-doubles in her first two seasons. Harriel willed the Redhawks to a tight, 56-52, win over Longwood on Dec. 20 with 18 points while tying a career-high with 13 rebounds. She scored nine of Southeast's last 10 points and went 8-for-9 from the charity stripe to help secure the victory. Two games later, Harriel began a streak of three-straight double-doubles. She poured in a career-high 26 points to go with 12 rebounds as the Redhawks nearly erased an 11-point deficit in the second half against Murray State on New Year's Eve. In Southeast's win over Jacksonville State on Jan. 2, the junior scored 12 points and corralled a team-high 11 rebounds. She made it three straight with 11 points and 11 rebounds at Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 7 and tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds in Monday's contest against SIU Edwardsville. She also scored a team-high 12 points at Tennessee Tech on Jan. 21 while chipping in 15 points in a win over Austin Peay on Jan. 30. The Cincinnati, Ohio native tallied 11 points at Eastern Illinois on Feb. 1. While she just missed a double-double against Tennessee State, Harriel did add a career-high 15 rebounds to her eight points in the win before scoring 16 points and adding 10 rebounds at Murray State on Feb. 11. That started a string of three-straight double-digit point totals as she scored 10 points at SIU Edwardsville and a team-high 16 against UT Martin. Harriel has scored in double figures 15 times this year, tied with
Bailie Roberts for the most on the team.
Running Point – Senior guard
Bianca Beck has moved on from a junior year that saw her struggle at the point. Beck has dished out a career-best 90 assists and sports a 1.29 assist to turnover ratio (eighth best in the OVC). In league play, Beck ranks eighth among all OVC players with 3.6 assists per game. The senior has also been a pleasant surprise on the glass, ranking fifth on the team with 4.2 rebounds per contest. On New Year's Eve, the St. Louis, Mo. native dished out a career-high nine assists. She recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds against Samford on Nov. 26. This is a welcome sign after a 2010-11 campaign that saw her commit 78 turnovers against only 44 assists. She has also scored in double figures seven times this season, surpassing her combined total from the last two years, and tied her career high in scoring (13 points) on three separate occasions.
Moving up the List – Junior center
Courtney Shiffer continued her ascent through the top 10 of Southeast's career blocked shots list. The Freeport, Ill., native swatted her 56th career shot against UT Martin on Saturday, tying Southeast Hall of Famer Pat Colon for the ninth most in school history.
Need the D – Southeast has been inconsistent defensively since the tail end of its non-conference schedule. In the first nine games of the season, Southeast led the OVC in scoring defense at 59.7 points per game and did not allow any opponent to score 70 points. In the next six, the Redhawks allowed 72.3 points per game while allowing 70 or more points three times. Southeast picked it up in the next five games, allowing fewer than 60 points three times and yielding 58.2 points per game in that stretch, but allowed 88 points at UT Martin on Jan. 28. After allowing only 59.8 points per game in the next five contests, UT Martin put up 77 on the Southeast defense last Saturday.
