CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – UT Martin made 12-of-29 three-pointers to send the Southeast Missouri women's basketball team to a 77-44 loss on Senior Night at the Show Me Center on Saturday.
The Redhawks (6-21, 3-11 Ohio Valley) have two regular season games remaining and are a game behind Austin Peay for the final OVC Tournament slot. The teams play in the regular season finale on Feb. 25.
“Tonight was a night where we were a little mentally fatigued,” Southeast head coach
Ty Margenthaler said. “We need to come up with something this week to get the team mentally ready to go on the road. The positive note is we're still competing, and still have a shot at the conference tournament.”
UT Martin (19-8, 13-1 OVC) opened up a 20-10 lead at the 7:32 mark of the first half after a Jaclissa Haislip three-pointer. Undeterred,
Karley Evans drilled a three-pointer then a jumper in the lane to cut the deficit in half at 15-10. However, the Skyhawks closed the first half on a 15-5 run to take a 35-20 lead into the locker room.
The Redhawks opened the second half with five consecutive points as
Courtney Shiffer and
Brittany Harriel made layups while
Bianca Beck split a pair of free throws. The surge was short lived as Jasmine Newsome drained a three-pointer on the next possession to spur a 10-2 run that made it 48-30 with 15:30 left. Southeast got no closer than 17 points the rest of the way.
Newsome finished with 21 points while adding nine rebounds and nine assists. UT Martin's Heather Butler led all players with 27 points.
Southeast was led offensively by
Brittany Harriel's 16 points, she also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Karley Evans dished out a team-best five assists.
The Redhawks honored seniors Beck, Evans and
Amber Holmes before the game as they played their final contest in the Show Me Center.
“For senior night, I apologized to the seniors for what happened tonight,” Margenthaler said. “This week I met with all of them and thanked them to their contributions to Southeast Missouri State. For them to go out on an athletic note the way we did was rough for them.”
The Skyhawks shot 41.9 percent from the floor overall with a nearly identical three-point percentage of 41.4. Southeast countered with 33.3 percent shooting and went 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from three-point range. The Skyhawks pulled down 46 rebounds compared to the Redhawks' 31 boards. Southeast committed 13 turnovers while UT Martin had nine miscues.
Southeast is back in action on Feb. 23 when it travels to Jacksonville State. Opening tip is at 5:15 p.m. CT.
