About Belmont – The Bruins won their first Ohio Valley Conference game in program history with a 66-52 home win over SIU Edwardsville on Saturday afternoon. Belmont rallied from a 31-28 halftime deficit behind a double-double 14 point, 11 rebound double-double from Jordan Coleman and 22 points out of Katie Brooks. Coleman leads BU in both scoring (11.0 points per game) and rebounding (10.1 rebounds per game). Her rebounding average leads the OVC while her 52.3 percent field goal percentage is second in the league. Five BU players are averaging at least 8.5 points per game. Belmont snapped a two-game losing streak with its win over SIUE, though it won three straight prior to the skid. BU has allowed more than 63 points only once in its last nine games and has held six of its 13 opponents below 60 points.
Last Meeting – Southeast moved back to .500 with an 81-72 road victory at Belmont on Dec. 9, 2000. The Redhawks finished the season 14-13 and went 9-7 in OVC play.
With a win, Southeast would…
•Win its conference opener for the first time since the 2006-07 season (67-53 over Tennessee State).
•Surpass its road win total from last season.
•Post its second win in its last three road conference contests.
•Hold a winning conference record for the first time since finishing 10-8 in the OVC in the 2008-09 season.
Getting Healthier – Southeast is expecting to have senior forward
Brittany Harriel's services back in the lineup against Belmont. Harriel was the Redhawks' leading scorer and rebounder last season, averaging 10.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while shooting 46 percent from the field. Harriel injured her non-shooting hand against Houston on Nov. 23 and missed the next seven games. The Cincinnati, Ohio native averaged 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds in the Redhawks' first five games, scoring in double figures four times in that span. During the first four games when she was completely health, Southeast was averaging 63 points per game. Since the injury, the Redhawks' offense fell to just 53.9 points per contest.
Cleaning the Glass – Junior forward
Patricia Mack has been a force on the glass this season. Through 12 games, Mack is third in the OVC in rebounding at 9.6 per game. She has grabbed seven or more rebounds in 10 of 12 games and has pulled in 10+ boards seven times in the last nine contests. That stretch began with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double at Arkansas State on Nov. 19. After two games with single-digit rebounds, Mack has grabbed 10 or more rebounds in six-straight games. She corralled 12 at Missouri on Nov. 29, pulled in a career-high 17 rebounds against UIC on Dec. 1, grabbed 11 more at Southern Illinois on Dec. 5, recorded 16 against Western Illinois on Dec. 8 and finished with 10 at Western Kentucky on Dec. 16. She is coming off her second double-double of the season, posting 12 points and 10 rebounds against Missouri State on Dec. 21.
Wright Stuff – Freshman guard
Kara Wright's play this season has earned her a spot in the Redhawks' starting lineup recently. The Louisville, Ky., native has started Southeast's last two games and responded with her two best performances of the season. In her first-career start, Wright returned to her home State to score a team-best 15 points while also grabbing eight rebounds at Western Kentucky. That performance earned her OVC Freshman of the Week honors, making her the first Southeast player to win the award since the 2000-01 season. She followed that up with 11 points against Missouri State on Dec. 21. In two starts, Wright is averaging 13 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field.
Breakout Non-Conference – Southeast posted its best non-conference run in years. The Redhawks' five wins are their most non-conference victories since the 2008-09 season, the last time they made the OVC Tournament. Winning at least five non-conference games has typically yielded strong results in conference play. The Redhawks finished .500 or better in OVC play in 12 of the 14 seasons they won at least five non-conference games. Southeast still has one more non-conference game, a Jan. 9 meeting with Saint Louis at the Show Me Center.
Magic Number is 60 – One important trend from the last three seasons is the Redhawks' need to hit the 60-point mark in games. Since the start of the 2010-11 season, Southeast is 10-6 when scoring 60 or more points and 10-44 when scoring below that threshold. Holding opponents under 60 points has also been critical as the Redhawks are 18-9 when holding their opponents below 60 points since the start of the 2010-11 season, but are 2-41 in their previous 43 contests when allowing 60+ points (1-4 this season).
