Redhawks in Home-Openers
Southeast is 15-5 in home-openers since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1991-92. The Redhawks are 1-2 in home-openers under head coach Dickey Nutt. Southeast has posted victories in seven of its last nine home-openers. The last time the Redhawks earned home-opening wins in back-to-back seasons was 2005-06 (vs. Truman State) and 2006-07 (vs. UC Riverside).
Redhawks Give Strong Effort in Season-Opening Loss to #7 Kansas
Southeast gave No. 7 Kansas all it could handle in a 74-55 season-opening loss on Nov. 9. The Redhawks and Jayhawks played in front of a sellout crowd of 16,300 at Allen Fieldhouse. Although the final score may not have indicated, Southeast had nationally-ranked KU on the ropes in the second half. The Redhawks trailed, 32-17, at halftime before pulling to within six when A.J. Jones hit two free throws to narrow the gap to 43-37 with 12:10 remaining. After that, the Jayhawks countered with a 17-6 run over the next 5:43 to pull away. Southeast fell to 9-13 all-time in season-opening games since moving to the NCAA Division I level.
Jones and Johnson Make First Career Starts
Forward Nino Johnson and guard A.J. Jones made their first career starts at No. 7 Kansas (Nov. 9). Johnson had a career-high 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in 25 minutes, while Jones added nine points and five rebounds in 26 minutes. In addition, Johnson knocked down the first three-pointer of his career.
Nice Defense
Southeast held Kansas to a mere 9.5 percent from three-point range. The Jayhawks were just 2-of-21 behind the arc and made one trey per half. It was the fewest number of three-pointers made against the Redhawks since Jacksonville State shot hit 2-of-12 on Feb. 23, 2012.
Niemczyk Boosts Redhawks
Nick Niemczyk scored double figures for the 15th time in his career when he dropped in a team-high 14 points off the bench at No. 7 Kansas (Nov. 9). It marked the second time Niemczyk scored 10 or more points off the bench in a season-opener. He made 5-of-14 field goals, 2-of-6 three-pointers and 2-of-2 free throws. Niemczyk also scored eight-straight points and buried threes on back-to-back possessions to cut KU's lead to eight (15-7) with 10:29 left in the first half. He also led the Redhawks with three steals in 33 minutes.
Keeping the Pace
Senior guard Marland Smith is on pace to break Southeast's all-time NCAA Division I record in games started. Smith made his 78th career start at No. 7 Kansas (Nov. 9) and currently ranks fourth. Derek Winans holds the school record with 101 starts from 2001-05. Smith has played in all 94 games of his Redhawk career.
Two-Game Homestand
The Redhawks open a two-game homestand against Lyon College Monday. Southeast will play host to McNeese State, which visits the Show Me Center for the first time on Nov. 15. The Cowboys come to Cape Girardeau on the return trip from last year's ESPN BracketBuster. Southeast will play three home matchups in November.
