Brittany Harriel recorded her third double-double in the last four games with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Courtney Shiffer chipped in 12 points and Bailie Roberts tallied 11 more.

“I was really proud to get that first conference win,” Southeast head coach Ty Margenthaler said. “At times tonight we did some really good things. The great thing about this team is that even when JSU made a run they didn't get rattled.”

The Redhawks opened up a 37-20 lead less than two minutes into the second half, but the Gamecocks put together an 8-0 run to claw back within nine points at 37-28. That score marked the closest the game had been since there was 6:31 left in the first half.

A baseline jumper by Shiffer ended the rally and put the Redhawks back up 11 with 14:57 left.

A JSU three-point play brought the gap to eight points and Danielle Vaughn added two more free throws to make it 39-33. Shiffer got underneath the basket for another layup to extend the Redhawks' lead to eight. After trading baskets, Bianca Beck grabbed a loose ball and scored at the other end to make it 45-35.

An Allyson Bradshaw three-point play extended the Redhawks' lead to 50-37 with 7:43 left. The Redhawks' lead grew as large as 20 points, 62-42, with less than three minutes left

Southeast opened up an early 7-4 lead just under five minutes into the contest, getting hoops from Evans, Roberts and Patricia Mack and a free throw make from Beck. Harriel and Yelena Rosado extended the lead to 11-4 by each going 2-for-2 at the free throw line two more free throws and Evans drove to the hole for a layup to make it 13-4 with 10 and a half minutes remaining in the first half.

Consecutive layups by JSU's Danielle Vaughn cut Southeast's lead to five points with 9:01 left in the opening stanza. She finished with a game-high 20 points and 16 rebounds.

Following a timeout, Beck found Harriel for a layup to make it 15-8. The Gamecocks countered with a three-pointer by Candace Morton, cutting the deficit to four. Undeterred, Southeast followed with the next nine points to take a 24-11 lead with 3:46 to go in the first half. A put back by Harriel at the buzzer capped the first half scoring to give the Redhawks their largest lead, 33-18, going into the break.

For the game, Southeast shot a season-high 44 percent from the field while holding Jacksonville State to 29.7 percent from the floor. Both teams hit just one three-pointer with JSU going 1-for-17 (5.9 percent) from long range and Southeast hitting just 1-for-11 (9.1 percent). After struggling to make free throws in the last two games, the Redhawks connected on 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) at the charity stripe and the Gamecocks countered with 9-of-15 (60.0 percent) shooting from the line.

JSU did win the rebounding battle, grabbing 47 rebounds compared to 34 by Southeast. The Redhawks forced a season-best 25 turnovers while committing 17 turnovers of their own.
