STARKVILLE, Miss. – Southeast Missouri (2-1) defeated Mississippi State (2-2) Saturday evening, 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-21). The Redhawks wrapped-up their opening weekend at the Maroon Classic going 2-1, winning the tournament.

Emily Coon was named tournament MVP while
Colleen Yarber and
Julie Shives earned all-tournament team accolades.

"Emily was unstoppable today," said head coach
Julie Yankus. "We passed well, allowing us to run our offense and get everyone involved. I am very happy with how we responded to our season opener to turn it around and win the tournament."

Nine of Southeast's first 11 points came from Bulldog errors in the first set. As the set continued, Southeast and MSU battled back and forth but Southeast prevailed in the end; winning 25-22.

At only a couple times in the second set, MSU had a three point lead; otherwise, neither team led by more than two points. Southeast used a couple late-set attack errors by the Bulldogs to take the set, 26-24, and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Mississippi State was able to jump out to a 14-5 lead on Southeast in the third set. Southeast battled to bring the score within one point of the Bulldogs at 21-22. MSU was able to ward off the Redhawk surge and take the third set, 25-22.

After falling behind 9-5, Southeast used a 7-0 run to pull ahead of Mississippi State and even the battlefield. The Redhawks were able to keep the Bulldogs from gaining ground and defeated MSU 25-21 and taking the match in four sets.

Coon had a career day with 23 kills. Coon also posted an impressive .583 hitting percentage. Yarber added 15 kills with 21 digs in the contest. As a team, Southeast recorded 54 kills and 84 digs. The Redhawks blocked 11 attacks while MSU only had two blocks. The Bulldogs also had 32 attack errors and six service errors against the Redhawks in Saturday's match.

Southeast will participate in the K-State Invitational Sept. 6-7. Tournament play will kick-off with a match-up between the Redhawks and host Wildcats Friday at noon.Â
