Baseball Adds Six During Early Signing Period

The Redhawks signed four junior college pitchers and two high school pitchers during the NCAA early signing period

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri interim head baseball coach Steve Bieser and his staff announced the addition of six student-athletes to the 2014 roster during the NCAA early signing period.

Joining the Redhawks next season are Greg Mosel (Darwin, Australia/Redlands CC), Tyler Iago (Newcastle, Okla./Redlands CC), Travis Hayes (Crystal City, Mo./Jefferson College), Garrett Stockton (Qulin, Mo./Three Rivers CC), Matthew Wade (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) and Andrew Croucher (Galveston, Texas/Galveston Ball HS).

“We were able to sign six quality student-athletes that fit the mold of our program,” said Bieser. Our staff has worked extremely hard in the recruiting process and the preparation Coach Rhodes and Coach Lawson have put in are second to none and they have done an outstanding job in recognizing and securing our signees.”

Greg Mosel
RHP
Junior College: Redlands Community College
Hometown: Darwin, Australia
 
Junior College: Greg plays for Redlands' head coach Matt Newgent and assistant coach (Morehead State alum and former signee of assistant coach Dillon Lawson) Matt Cartwright...Both were instrumental in helping get Greg committed...Mosel has a power arm as he will pitch in the 90-94 mph range...He also has a good feel for his secondary pitches with his slider having professional type action...He helped Redlands Community College become a mainstay in the NJCAA Top 25 rankings in 2012… He Threw 49.2 innings allowing 50 hits in 2012…He recorded 57 strikeouts and 13 walks as he recorded a 4.89 ERA.
 
Coach Bieser on Mosel: “Greg is an outstanding sign for our program. We are getting a top of the rotation starting pitcher who has been battled tested. Greg is a mature young man as he balances his athletics with his academics.”

Tyler Iago
RHP
Junior College: Redlands Community College
Hometown: Newcastle, Okla.

Junior College: Tyler plays for Redlands' head coach Matt Newgent and assistant coach (Morehead State alum and former signee of assistant coach Dillon Lawson) Matt Cartwright...Both were instrumental in helping get Tyler committed...Tyler pitches 89-92 mph with a great change-up...He is a true pitcher that can change speeds and he locates his fastball as good as any pitcher we have seen this fall...Tyler is a strong student and has outstanding make-up...Helped Redlands Community College become a mainstay in the NJCAA Top 25 rankings in 2012…He sported an impressive 3.04 ERA last season…Threw 47.1 innings allowing 38 hits…Amassed 43 strikeouts on the season with only 15 walks.
 
Coach Bieser on Iago: "Tyler is an outstanding student-athlete who has excelled in both the classroom and on the field. He has great mound presence and really understands the art of pitching. He will be a factor in our rotation in 2014.”

Travis Hayes
RHP
Junior College: Jefferson College
Hometown: Crystal City, Mo.

Junior College: Travis plays for Jefferson College head coach Sam Carol and assistant coach Pat Evers...Travis went to Jefferson College from Crystal City High School, the same high school as freshman Alex Winkelman.. Travis has a live fastball that will sit in the 86-90 range to go along with a curveball that is a plus pitch at the Division I level...He helped Jefferson College establish themselves as one of the best NJCAA teams in the nation as they were ranked as high as second in the nation in 2012…Threw 55 innings allowing 51 hits a season ago…recorded an ERA of 4.58…Recorded 57 strikeouts on the season.

Coach Bieser on Hayes: “Travis is a young man who I have followed since his high school days and each time I saw him pitch, I came away impressed. He is coming from a top Junior College program and should be ready to be a force in our pitching staff in 2014.”

Garett Stockton
RHP/OF
Junior College: Three Rivers CC
Hometown: Qulin, Mo.
 
Junior College: Garret plays for Three Rivers head coach Stacey Burkey and assistant coach Joe Scarano...Both are great friends of the Redhawks coaching staff and big believers in the program...Garret is extremely athletic and has the ability to pitch and hit in the OVC...His fastball works in the 88-91 mph range and he has a swing-and-miss slider that is anywhere from 78-81 mph...Garret will move into the starting rotation as the ace of the Raiders pitching staff this coming season...He sported an impressive 1.37 ERA last season as an established closer for Three Rivers CC…Threw 26.1 innings allowing 17 hits and only six walks…Allowed only 17 hits on the season with 24 strikeouts.
 
Coach Bieser on Stockton: “Garrett is a guy we recruited out of high school; he is a great athlete who can definitely help us as a two-way player. We look forward to getting him in our system and seeing how he develops as an athlete.”

Matthew Wade
RHP
High School: First Assembly Christian School
Hometown: Cordova, Tenn.
 
High School: Matthew played for the Memphis Tigers during the summer and their program has a history of sending players onto Division I programs...Matt's fastball works at 85-88 mph...He has also shown advanced feel for his off-speed pitches...Recorded an Impressive 0.76 ERA last spring…Threw 27.2 innings on the mound allowing 18 hits and only eight walks…Recorded 31 strikeouts on the season.

Coach Bieser on Wade: “I' am very impressed with Matt's make-up; he is  character guy who helps everyone around him get better. He has tremendous upside and his best years are definitely ahead of him. He will be a mainstay in our program for many years.”

Andrew Croucher
RHP
High School: Galveston Ball HS
Hometown: Galveston, Texas

High School: Andrew played for Clear Falls High School head coach Eddie Youngblood before moving to Galveston Ball HS for the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year... Andrew also played for Mizuno Houston coaches Shane Nance and Micah McAdams... Andrew is a four pitch pitcher with a fastball that sits in the 85-88 range...Andrew is a very high character kid with a tremendous work ethic...He has the potential to develop into a really outstanding pitcher at the collegiate level...Was the staff ace for Clear Falls HS last spring…Earned All-District honors in 2012…Named Houston Chronicle Athlete of the Week on April 1, 2012 after recording back-to-back eight inning contests.

Coach Bieser on Croucher: “Andrew is a workhorse; he has a great work ethic already at a young age and will only get better with more experience. He is a big time competitor who has excelled against tough Texas talent.”
