Barringer was the 1989 NCAA Division I national champion in the heptathlon and was a Division II All-American in the heptathlon in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989. Barringer was an Olympic Trials qualifier in the heptathlon in 1988 and placed 11th at the NCAA Division I national championships in 1989. She was a 1989 indoor track All-American in the long jump and hurdles.
